I'm thinking of kicking about Mexico for a couple of weeks in the spring. I bought a passport last week. You didn't used to need a passport to go to Mexico or Canada I've been as far abroad as Vancouver and Monterrey, but you need one now, so.

Anyway when my uncle heard about my vague plans he warned me that 'they're gunning down Americans on sight.' as proof he offered the figure of six Americans murdered in Mexico in the past six months, about as many murdered Americans as the city of Lincoln produces in a year, and of course Mexico is a neighbor and a huge trading partner, and the number of citizens of one country currently being in the other at the moment is for various reasons much higher than the population of Lincoln at any time. Not that I want to downplay the real dangers of Mexican nightlife, just to say that it's the same as any other bad neighborhood, nation-sized or no. Never buy drugs on credit and you'll be exponentially safer everywhere.

But he's not one to bother arguing with my uncle. He's one who takes pride in being right while at the same time being able to separate his own rightness from the level of fact in what he says. What he says isn't right because the information is correct, this matters very little. No, whatever he happens to say is right because he is the one saying it and I am his junior. Yesterday he said something about how well the Creighton football team was doing, and I got nothing but an angry brick wall response when I pointed out that they haven't played American football there since the forties, though the soccer team is indeed pretty good.

Later that day he pointed out that many Native Americans are changing their names back to something prototypicaly Native instead of whatever Anglophone name was imposed on their families back in Boarding House days. The way my uncle stated this made it clear that he considered this a case of minorities getting special rights, 'They can do anything on Indian Reservations' when of course everybody is free to change their name to anything. There are some exceptions, they'll be no getting 'Dr. Cuntfucker Supreme' printed on your license, and it's something that's done very rarely, since of course it make family dinners even more painful, but it's legal to all just the same.

The uncle said that when Indians on the Rosebud Reservation are given subsidized housing, either from The State or the casino up there, the first thing they do is rip out the toliets and sinks and sell them to the highest bidder, using the holes in the floor for waste removal.

US. So now there's a move afoot to name this evil chunk of road after Martin Luther King, in the name of 'healing.' For some reason I'm thinking of Chris Rock's tales of flunking his Black History class as a child, answering every question with 'Martin Luther King!'. And which Martin Luther King do they intend to name the road after? The real MLK or the one who shills for Mercedes-Bens and opposes affirmative action? I think you know the answer to that as well as I do dear reader.

Yeah, I guess it's kind of old. But I just read it, so bear with me.

This post is largely about people trying to assure themselves of their own goodness by taking proud, ostentatious stands against things every sane person is against. It's similar I think to things that I've touched on a lot in my own thoughts and writings.

It reminded me of the death penalty debate, among other things, the way that DP supporters will piously declare that they motivated by empathy for murder victims, while suggesting that DP opponents must not care about the victims. And of course the premise that it is impossible to mourn a murder victim without screaming for the killers head is known to be false. Relatives of the victim after all, parents, spouses, siblings, who indisputably love their dead, have often called for the killers life to be spared for one reason or the other.

So support for the death penalty seems a pretty obvious way of upping the moral ante for the morally insecure. If you convince yourself that it is impossible to oppose murder without opposing the death penalty, then an obvious given suddenly becomes something exceptional and heroic.

And we Americans live in a culture that is both highly competitive and deeply moralistic. We are raised to believe that exceptional and heroic is the basic minimum standard of what we should strive to be; and so this anti-kitten burning pseudo-morality could be applied to any number of other issues as well. In this we are surely not alone.

Subliminals effect the brain to make persons dumber as well as whatever the host wants them to do. The brain is enclosed in a hard cranium bone. Subliminals effect the gastrointestinal areas more easily because they are not enclosed in bone. Malab-sorbtion with yellow poo is likely to be caused by subliminals. This means the brain does not get the nutrients that it should. Chinese leaders are making Chinese and Americans dumber this way too.

GAY MEN GENOCIDED
Gay men accepted a study in which some were given a placebo in place of a medical pill. This is illegal because persons with a placebo would be getting AIDS and AIDS without proper medicine for 6 months or as long as the study occurred.
Placebos were never meant for such a serious contagion. Our government outlawed placebos for AIDS studies since inception of the AIDS disease. That’s why we relied on monkeys for testing for so long.
Secondly the study is outright flawed because there are too many variables. If fifty men have sex only with one person and fifty have sex with twenty persons then the variables are too many to be called a study.
Thirdly one person may have HIV without full blown AIDS. Another person may have full blown AIDS and pass along a huge viral load. So what are these persons bragging about in the news?

They said women were more honest, intelligent, compassionate, outgoing and creative when it came to leadership. On intelligence, 43 percent said men and women were equal, 38 percent said women were smarter and 14 percent said men were smarter.

Some might see this stat as a sign that feminism has gone too far, that attitudes towards gender have jumped over the point of fairness and straight into the realm of reverse discrimination. But what this survey actually displays is the old feminist trope that 'patriarchy hurts men too.' It shows that feminism hasn't gone far enough in breaking down the nonsense that American men believe about ourselves.

Women have more freedom to outwardly appear intelligent, openly thoughtful and ambivalent, whereas men are taught that reaching a conclusion for its own sake, and then manfully standing behind it, is far more important than the process of reaching that conclusion. To value the thought process is necessarily to confess to vulnerability and weakness. To acknowledge fallible judgment and the possibility of being wrong is to acknowledge the possibility of being hurt by the consequences of being wrong. This is blasphemy to our masculine ideal. Certainly the work they do in revealing war crimes that never would have otherwise been publicly known is important, and certainly it's fun to see politicians exposed for chicanery, weasel speak, and outright bullshit, but these are all things we more-or-less knew were going on before. The most important thing that Wikileaks does is to demystify the State's power over life and death, deflate the mythical archtype of the Jason Bourne/Jack Ryan style technosuperman, expose our fascination with the modern war making and dirty tricks business; with all of its fantastic technology and intriguing code languages, as nothing but the most childish servility.

To read through the Wikileaks files on war, peace, diplomacy espionage and the rest is to discover that there is no 'great game' going on, no taut psychological thriller keeping you on the edge of your seat. Decisions over the lives of hundreds or thousands or people are not made with cameras slow-panning the tension on the faces of various sundry officials while the leader cites Plato in a speech on the terrible import of what he is about to do.

No, the relationships between the nations of the world, whether malevolent or benign, are determined by very flawed and perfectly ordinary people, people who will or won't order a bombing that kills thousands if they decide that this is the most personally convenient choice to make, the one that will prevent the need to make more decisions later. There is a cliquish and banal familiarity between geopolitical players. Tensions between nations rise and fall based on the personal jealousies between leaders and diplomats. It's all so routine and human, to the point where I think the powers that be would actually prefer that they've been caught in some horrible scandal, some Illuminati-style conspiracy, because at least there's still some aura to being sinister. But no, the great leaders of the world are all a little myopic and more than a little dopey, but that's really all they are.

I think the one who need to apologize to the fans is not Pelini, it is NU Chancellor Harvey Perlman for hiring Steve Pederson. Steve in turn fired Frank Solich and hired a horrible coach named Bill Callahan. Steve also wrote PADDED contracts for Callahan and himself worth millions even if they were fired. All these decisions were approved and oversaw by good old Perlman. So Harvey I think you owe us an apology for destroying husker football the last decade and costing the program millions of dollars (way worse than yelling at a ref). You are so lucky to still have a job because you pushed all blame all on Pederson and Callahan.

I read a 'Life article' on Haiti, and a corresponding thread on Fark. The story was as dispiriting as you might expect, but it's some of the thread comments that really caught my eye.

This sensitivity is very common among small-fish citizens of big-fish nations. It may seem easy to accept being born into a rich and powerful society as just good luck, but it's actually very hard, not in spite of our material comforts but because of them. One who has been born here into the modern United States, on gone on to invest in our institutions and make his life here; house car job and the rest, needs to believe that his relative fortune is cosmically deserved, and cannot accept that he could have just as easily (more easily in fact) been born into a place where the precise level of talent and intelligence he has now would leave him starved naked and dead.

This is a fad that's been pushed by the NRA and other groups in various states in recent years, and the purpose is quite obviously to make the 'man's home is his castle' saw literally encoded in law. Personally I like the retreat law. But maybe that's just because I've been feminized enough to think that violence is bad-in-itself, and that the choice between the good guys life and bad guys life should best be avoided until it is absolutely impossible. Surely the graveyards are full of enough real men who took heroic stands against evil, relished in making offenders suffer, and than wilted to death from old age to prove that macho is bullshit. Apparently some don't think so.

The bill is a clear example of what the right wing considers freedom to be, which is not democracy as much as democratic feudalism. (Hence the pedantic insistence that we are a republic instead of a democracy in some libertarian circles.) By this thinking the right to vote and speak ones mind are a good deal less important than the right to punish personal offenses however a (White, Christian) man sees fit, up to and including most crucially having some power over life and death. Legal equality exists only to provide a fair playing field for men to fight for dominance and expand their fiefs, while social equality, not just forced economic equality but any attempt to alter the social hierarchy, is the blackest of all evils.

In the New York Times I read of a man who helped to attach some right-to-carry boilerplate in a Congressional bill meant to give citizens of Washington DC. better federal representation. He admitted, or rather bragged, about not giving a damn whether the people of DC had the right to vote or not. they are nothing but a bunch of Brown peasents, and living in an urban environment like that requires a good deal of innate cooperativeness between citizens. That makes them doubly evil, so fuck em.

This is related, I think to the narritives of President Obama as a radical, Muslim, illegitimate usurper, etc. It's a gross simplification to say that all opposition to Obama or anti-immigration hysteria is based on direct and conscious racism. Old-school, overt, cross burning racism has become taboo in almost every segment of American society. It's a half-conscious feeling among the White middle class that their control of society is simply the natural order of things; that a world where politicians focus on pandering for their votes, popular culture focuses on catering to their sensibilities, and corporations focus on marketing for their dollars; is nothing more than a world running on its proper equilibrium.

The desire to believe that many if not most Hispanic newcomers are 'illegal', the fact that the sort of banal ethnic-identity markers that should be taken as givens, (Latinos speaking Spanish among themselves, old country flags on truck windows) are seen as signs of their illegality, is clearly meant to delegitimatize the physical reality of their being here. Just as narratives of President Obama as a mad Leftist hellbent on corrupting America's natural state are also obvious attempts to deligitimize his presence in the White House.

For many in the White middle and upper classes, the idea that their loss of cultural and demographic dominance could possibly be benign, spontaneous, and organic is simply inconceivable. This is especially true in rural and suburban areas where they have previously been not only culturally dominant but culturally uniform. The mere fact that we are losing this control is proof enough that there are malevolent forces behind this loss.

Why do Republicans hate trains? Is this really just a situation in which Democrats and Europeans find value in trains, so therefore it is un-American to ride trains?


This is part of the reason why yes, but conservatives here have long had a bitter hatred towards both passenger rail and public transportation in general. (Hard to notice, I know, with all of the other people and things they bitterly hate.)

What it comes down to I think is that their understanding of society is basically feudal. Today's right wing considers even the most basic anthropological definition of society; cooperation and loyalty to strangers, and acknowledging some level of dependence to them, to be socialist. People exist for the purpose of competing against each other for dominance, and will only grudgingly band together with members of their own tribes to fight off a common threat to their dominance. There is no common duty, no concept of 'us' existing beyond opposition to common enemies and paying homage to totems of state power such as the flag or the right-wings cartoon version of the constitution.

Their main problem with trains and public transport then is that it's all so damned public. It requires being in at least the physical presence of social outsiders, people from different backgrounds living different lives; often the sort of people who the right-winger bases a huge chunk of his own self-worth on looking down upon. People without cars, which is a deprivation akin to homelessness in the conservative mind, city dwellers, who are either impoverished brown-skinned factory and jail fodder who can't afford to own a McMansion like Real Americans do or some filthy hipster/homosexual who could afford a real home if they wanted to but choose the city only to better indulge their pagan depravity.

Driving, on the other hand, is either done alone or with people from one's own family or social group. Our auto based transport system is a fantastic way to keep the separate classes of America separate, which is of course a big part of the reason for why we were made to get around this way; and there are quite a few among us who won't broke any challenge to this separation and the personal sense of superiority that this separation makes possible.

I Dreamed

That I took shelter with some stock character immigrants/street urchins. They lied in a tiny hidden space taking up the rear five feet of a Home Depot sorta place. The stairway to their apartment, such as it was, was more of a carpeted ladder in a chimney. There was a woman with five kids and three brown boys with the voices of middle-aged men. Lots of rats. Women knitting spider webs and humming tuneless tunes. I was told to come back whenever I like, whenever I was in trouble. Baby carriages at random spots on the floor making it hard to walk.

CHILDREN’S FOLK FESTIVAL
A thousand puppets, a hundred storytellers, a couple of mimes, clowns and jugglers and a fire eater can assemble in three states to the delight of all children and parents. Possibly Kentucky in June, Oklahoma in July and Utah in August can host a Children’s Folk Festival. Perhaps other states would like this celebration of child-ren’s happy concerns.
We can bring children and parents from all over to enjoy the fest, a trip to a local lake and a tent city for campers. Local children can rehearse to be in a children’s proces-sion on Friday evenings like they do in Germany’s Bav-aria’s Children ‘s Festival.
We have puppet contests in many states. Glen Echo in our nation’s capitol hosts storytellers from all around.
Mimes and jugglers come from Central Park in New York and circuses. College students love to do summer stock. “Let’s go to the Child-ren’s Folk Festival instead of Disneyland” this year can be the statement hailed by parents!

There are many who believe the sentiment that Limbaugh expresses, who believe that holding this creed makes them strong clear-eyed realists in a weak pc world. I myself would have a much easier time accepting that they are sincere truth tellers, and not simply bigots, if a single one of them considered himself the slave.

I know I've made this point several times before, still let us be clear on just who these folks are. These are not especially stupid people. They are able to say and believe stupid things because in their particular social groups there is nothing to be gained from not being stupid, rather they gain social esteem almost chiefly through their ability to manfully express indignation. They are convinced that the only true measure of human worth is the willingness to fight for and avenge affronts against the sacred and pure. They 'know' that they cannot be decent people unless they are constantly defending what they hold dear, and so they are desperate to believe that what they hold dear is under constant peril. Lust is far too weak of a word to describe how badly they NEED to feel outraged and threatened.

So Fox News, the most trusted and reliable supplier of outrage to these addicts, comes along and feeds them a little line, and they really couldn't care less that it's low-grade stuff.

Easy to Understand Insanity

The state of Missouri has a ballot initiative to regulate puppy mills, aimed to prevent such typical puppy mill luxuries as forced inbreeding and keeping females perpetually pregnant until they drop dead before age five. Naturally there is a cohort of tea-partiers in Missouri who; well, their language cannot be precisely translated to English, so there's really no way to know for sure, but they seem to think that the measure is really bad.


Well, according to the Alliance For Truth, the main force behind the anti-Prop B movement, there is something much more nefarious afoot (er, apaw) in the HSUS measure. The Alliance For Truth claims that the HSUS has a "radical agenda" and is "misleading the public with its intentions on Prop B. The society seeks only to raise the cost of breeding dogs, making it ever-more difficult for middle-class American families to be dog-owners."

Anita Andrews from Alliance For Truth told TPM that it's a "deceptive, lying bill" that is "trying to purposefully get rid of the breeders." The state of Missouri, she said, has been given a bad rap as "the puppy mill capitol" of the U.S. but "in truth we have the best ribbon breeders in the country." And, Andrews said, the state already has anti-cruelty laws on the books.

"They don't like animals," she said of the Humane Society of the United States.

Andrews also explained that Cass Sunstein, "one of the biggest animal rights activists," and President Obama's Administrator of the Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs, is tied to the HSUS, and is helping them give Obama "a punch list" of the animals rights activists' agenda.

You see, there's a difference between animal rights activists and animal welfare activists. Unlike the HSUS, Sunstein, and other animal rights activists, animal welfare activists like the Alliance For Truth have "no intention of wiping every animal off this earth," Andrews said. Animal welfare activists believe in hunting and that people should take care of animals.

Rights activists, on the other hand, think "humans and animals are on the same level, ownership of an animal is slavery," and that "animals should have attorney representation" (presumably so every dog can have his day in court).

All this garble raises a somewhat important question; what, to the right-winger, is 'big government'?

In North Platte I knew a man who scoffed at any constitutional challenge a suspect made against an arrest or other police action. This man would always rail on and on against the rights and luxuries that criminals supposedly receive at the expense of victims. Then on the day this man got a ticket for parking the wrong way on a neighborhood street he responded by screaming profanities for twenty minutes, destroying a couple hundred dollars worth of his own property, and calling city hall over and over again, growing ever more enraged as whoever was answering his calls refused to stay on the line and let him abuse her. The tyranny of the twenty dollar ticket would not stand.

In the end it's very simple. The right-winger will support any law or regulation passed by legitimate White Male authority figures, so long as it is seen as telling the poor, the brown, the heathen, or the female what they can't do. He will support the harshest penalties for crimes associated with social outgroups; drug use, prostitution, petty theft, etc, for so long as he sees the law as a tool for keeping these people under heel where they belong. It is those laws seen as imposing on White, Male, Christian prerogative that bring out cries of Marxism. A two percent tax hike on the rich is far more tyrannical than restrictions on contraception, or minority religious rights, not because of the amount of liberty being restrained but whose liberty is being restrained.

It should be self-evident that it is the States security powers; police and military, are the best friends of any would-be dictator. (Which isn't to say that cops and soldiers are evil, it's just the Lockean compromise of accepting State authority in return for civilization.) Yet the right-winger is completely unbothered by the power of the Pentagon or the fact that the US has far more of its citizens locked up than any other democracy. What the right-winger fears and hates is 'bureaucracy'. He is enraged by the host of minor, practical (or perhaps not so much) impositions on his own affairs, the laundry list of rules and regulations that are inevitable in any complex society. He hates the small day-to-day laws that apply to all, not because they impose on his rights as a citizen, but because they remind him that he is only a citizen and not a feudal lord. It is intolerable that he should have to walk twenty feet out the door to smoke a cigarette. It is justice that someone else should sit in jail for smoking a joint.

Getting back then to the rant quoted in the TPM article; who is it that generally runs these puppy mills? White, rural, "Common Clay of the New West" types mostly, and I'd hazard to guess there is also a fair number of loudly self-professing Christians among them. And now there is a proposed law that seeks to tell these Real Americans what they can and can't do with their property; Real Americans are being told that they are entitled to something less than absolute life-or-death dominance of other creatures. Naturally this must be opposed, and to keep with the rarefied dignity of Real Americans this opposition must be presented as a cosmic battle against unfathomable evil.

We can laugh at the hysteria of it, as well we should, but we laugh only because we are elitist enough to think that making any damn sense is more important than being righteous.

For some reason I'm reminded in particular of this time back in 2004. I was at a family gathering and; was called upon to describe the details of Jenna Cooper's slaying. For anyone confused about how a first lady's suggestions to eat healthy could possibly be controversial, the second quote from Rep. Hoekstra should be helpful. Real Men are neither threatened or concerned by anything except enemies, and the beating off of enemies real and imagined is essentially the only important thing that a person or a nation can ever do.

To suffer at the hands of an enemy is so disgraceful that the True Man commits his entire conciousness to preventing it. To suffer at the hands of so-called natural causes, on the other hand, is no more than the will of a God who is manliness incarnate. It is indisputable that the death of one tribe member at the hands of an outsider is far worse than the death of a hundred from heart attacks.

To believe otherwise is to accept that the threat from others is only a very small part of a greater battle against death that we are all doomed to lose; and all right-wing narratives are based on maintaining the illusion of omnipotence. This then is why Glen Beck would rather shove a hard glistening stick up someone's ass than be so queer as to worry about healthy eating.
