There's This Pregnant Woman I Know

I've noticed that comments or questions about her pregnancy are always, without fail, the first thing out of the mouth of everyone she speaks you. Even two-word courtesy phrases are always something in the vein of 'excuse me mama'.

I can understand some fascination with sex and reproduction. I've heard rumors that there's such a thing, but is a woman's motherhood always and forever the most notable thing about her from the first time she becomes noticibly pregnant until the end of her days? Me I'm a shy guy, and would probably be the same way if I were a woman, and the thought of running into such intrusive annoyences and knowing that there would never be any escape from them, horrifying isn't remotely adequate.

The woman I speak of here though, she's taking it well, but I do have a strong sense that she's burning inside.

So, Bellevue, with its contiguous urban blending into Omaha, has less in common in Omaha than Gretna, from where one can reach 10th and O or 13th and Dodge in the same amount of time. Right.

Shady gerrymandering from any party is of course not remotely new. But combine this nonsense with the Jim Suttle recall attempt, followed by the whining after its failure that the outcome was determined by treating homeless people like citizens and allowing them to vote, the petulant harrumphing of many right-wingers in the suburbs around Omaha about having to pay a wheel tax to support the upkeep of its streets just because they drive on them every day and contribute to there wear... (These are true self-reliant Americans you see, and if forced to support those deadbeats in the city they can just take their talents and their business somewhere else you know. As for the fact that they aren't quite self-reliant enough to live on any of the millions of acres in Nebraska that aren't within thirty miles of a major city, never mind ya fucking commie.)

It's almost as if right-wingers, in Nebraska and elsewhere consider themselves better than everyone else. (may one dare say elitist?) And since they are better then everyone else than they should get what they want by fiat without facing the humiliating prospect of being outvoted by dirty brown people and smartass hipsters. As social change has inexorably worn away white suburban privilege, so too has all of the old patriotic pieties used to justify that privilege been gradually stripped away to the naked childish 'I WANT IT!!' it has always and only ever been.

These people really do consider themselves aristocrats. They believe with utter seriousness that this country and all of us in it outside of their social group exist to serve them. So be it. We will, end, win anyway. The Omaha district will, in the short-term, remain competitive, in both congressional and presidential races. In the long-term it will become solidly Democratic, while the perfectly safe Republican third district will fade from existence. While all of this is happening, Republican primaries for state office will be clouded with a glut of term-limited amateurs from the new-style populist unicam. Conservative dominance of the state will, through hubris and entropy if nothing else, gradually erode. The more power they grab through naked entitlement the more shall slip through their fingers.

I was one of many who had stopped even wondering when Bin Laden would be caught. It's not that there was any point where I gave up hope that he would be, it's just that I had come to half-consciously believe that he was either already dead of peaceful causes or would head that way someday soon, a phantom kept alive to inspire jihadists and despirit the West. Well, he was apparently still a flesh and blood man hanging out in more-or-less modern medium-sized city, and we really fucking got him. I remember Sept. 11, I woke up foggy from a slight hangover about an hour after the towers had collapsed. Take that for what you will, and since then have spent the last decade growing slightly wiser and ever more aware of and horrified at those who actively lust and strive for a twenty first century of eternal geocultural strife. This hellish vision of chauvinists in both East and West, who both wear their hatred for each other as badges of purity and need each other as couples do, was something that I had real hope the election of Obama would hope to kill. I have been both satisfied and disappointed in this. And now I feel the same hope with the death of this flesh-and-blood bogeyman. We'll see.

I was somewhat shocked to learn he was only fifty four, born in the same year as my mother. The man was Palpatine.

Did I celebrate Bin Laden's death. No, I thought the presidents response was perfectly appropriate. Somber over the fact that this had to be done, yet openly satisfied that it was done and done so well. I for my part did not scream or shout. I did drink some rum and spit on the ground that would soon hold him, which turned out to be the sea, whatever. Whether a live capture and trial would have been preferable; well it was simply never going to happen. How could this man have thrown his hands up and surrendered after sending so many deluded young mooks to gloriously die? He took what he himself knew was his only option. He was a true believer in what he preached.

And what he preached was quite simply treason. You might remember the dustup over JW Lindh, the 'American Taliban' in the days just after 9/11. People were demanding his death, his rape, his torture, fuck all of them. Me I'm a lefty who cares very little for sacred national loyalties and the betrayal of them. Bin Laden on the other hand was a real traitor, a man who declared the comforts and pleasures of modern civilization to be absolute evil, who insisted that beliefs exist to violently seek dominance over each other and that men exist to die for their beliefs. Osama bin Laden was a traitor against humanity and against life. This fraudulent revolutionary, this silver-spoon hypocrite, was a traitor against all oppressed people who have faced their stunted lives with hope and courage, seeking pools of happiness where they could and resisting to the end the urge to give into despair and murderous rage. And those Arabs in Libya and Syria who now risking their lives for the sake of living should be glad that they have been deburdened of this false prophet of death, stagnation, and the only flavor of damnable treason worthy of the name.

I'm not a big believer in victory. I'm much to cynical to think that winning is any evidence of virtue. But I do know true, moral, meaningful victory when I see it, and this is it. A victory for civilization sure, not to be grand. More importantly a victory for modernity, happiness, fun, a victory for gleeful decadence, for sex with strangers, drunken sing-alongs with strangers, for children playing chaotic games while their stuck-up parents fret that they're not learning the real value of winning. A victory of hearing about how your grandparents had to drive eight hours down a dirt road to town to see the latest pictures and, not being the slightest bit ashamed of your own comparative leisure, but fucking glad for it. A victory for life, and, in the broadest sense of the term, a victory for liberalism.

You've heard the phrase 'Sic semper tyrannis' right? You know, the state motto of Virginia, the thing that drama queen JW Booth said when he iced Lincoln. You've probably heard that it translates to English as 'death to tyrants' but that's not true. It actually translates as 'thus always to tyrants.' Not what should or must be done to them but what by course will happen to them.

So no, I do not celebrate the death of Bin Laden or any other man. But I will go so far as to say that those who believe that infantile games of dominance are magically dignified by blood shall spill their own, those who think that suffering-for-its own sake builds character shall suffer for their own characters, those who think life is lived for struggle shall fail their struggle to live. and those who preach the godliness of death shall quickly behold the face of their god.

According to Congressman West, women exist for the purpose of 'strengthening up the men who are going to fight for you.' Women exist for no other purpose except to produce ideal men, the vagina exists only as an incubator, and only some poor neutered homo could possibly want it for anything else.

Allen West is, of course, the perfect opposite of a homo, and just to emphasize this already obvious fact he pointed to the ancient Spartans as the ideal that American men should strive for, the pinnacle of manliness that must leave other men quivering with admiration is they themselves hope to be real men. Go get em tigers.

On a more serious note, I was struck by the definitive future statement, 'the men who are going to fight for you.' West takes it as a given that being metaphorically tied to the train tracks and in need of manly rescue is an essential state of being for the American woman; today, tomorrow, and forever. This eternal peril is necessary because pleasure is effeminate. Real men cannot be allowed to ever express love through things like joy or laughter, but only through violently defending the people and things they love against the latest outrage.

This leaves any prospective real man in a bind. Because not even the most chauvinistic Bubbas are insane enough to actually want their wives or daughters to be in mortal danger, yet still believe that avenging some affront to home and hearth is the only true expression of masculine love. Demagogues have always been very happy to solve this conundrum for them, offering threats in the form of minorities, foreigners, street criminals, outsiders and eccentrics. People who are socially weak; and therefore safely hated and 'defeated', yet in spite of their weakness still somehow capable of destroying everything you love through some dark magic, and somehow always still there and still threatening no matter how much manly punishment is unleashed upon them.

And since you can never be allowed to conclude that the people you love are as safe as mortality allows, (this would be willfully embracing impotence) you must then conclude that there can never possibly be any such thing as enough power or capacity for destruction. You'll start doing things like demanding the right to take a gun to the coffee shop, as if this is some ancient social norm only recently violated. You will start to insist, perhaps in a roundabout way, that institutions responsible for projecting force; military, police, etc. are incapable of error, that soldiers are never sent on an unwise mission, police never arrest the wrong man, that lack of fear towards insufficiently harsh punishment is the motive behind all crime. Everything you say will come out of your mouth in an aggressive, defensive matter. If you feel the need to tell someone how much you love peanut butter sundaes, you will do so by saying 'I don't care what you think, but if you don't think the peanut butter sundae is the most delicious thing on God's green earth to you can suck my country dick.'

You'll be a real asshole, is what I'm saying. And you'll never be very happy. But never mind, happiness would only neuter you right?

This sentence is not in any way untrue. President Obama did, in fact, 'fail' to release a proclamation in honor of Easter. And if this offends you you'll be glad to know that he 'failed' to do so for the same reason that my family failed to toast Elijah at Easter dinner; because it is not and has never been customary for the president to make such a proclamation. (George W. Bush, for example, is just one of some forty or so presidents who have allowed multiple Easters to pass without official commemoration.)

Then again, if such things do offend you it's probably because living in a constant waking state of offense makes you feel like a true American Hero, in which case I'm sorry to bother you with facts.

And of course since those human rights mentioned in our own Bill of Rights are the only ones that do or were ever meant to exist, this can only mean that our holy Founding Fathers sought not only to prevent the abomination of gay marriage from ever reaching our shores, but the abomination of marriage.

It is obvious friends that only Bastards were ever intended to be citizens of the United States, and that we will never return to the 'shining city on the hill' until children of legally married couples are striped of all voting rights and legal protections, and all non-bastard office-holders are impeached. Every judge or priest who has deprived this country of true sons and daughters by performing the blasphemous wedding ceremony must be shot for a traitor. And those swine who defile our gene pool by producing children with their 'husbands' and 'wives' deserve no better.
True patriots serve their country by having unprotected sex with strangers. In order to restore Bastard Americans to our rightful majority we must begin a program of recruiting Third-World prostitutes to our shores immediately. And while I loathe the thought of granting amnesty to illegal immigrants as well as anyone, the truth is that the Guatemalan streetwalker who brings seven illiterate children from seven different fathers is not only no criminal, but the greatest friend America can have in these dark days. A few days ago, Congressman Paul Broun of Georgia, (Athens is the anchor city of his district. I'm listening to the B-52s right now.) went on a long rant about FDR being a communist. It's the sort of thing you've probably heard before, notable mainly because it was made on the floor of Congress instead at the Rotary club by a shitfaced RV dealer, and also for this very odd assertion of Broun's at some point in the middle of his rant:

"Broun was speaking Tuesday on the House floor about how the 'original intent' of the Constitution was to promote the 'general welfare of the nation, not welfare of individuals'"

Now it may seem obvious to you or me, perhaps even old-fashioned common-sensical. That 'The Nation' is nothing more than the sum of the individuals who live here. that there is no possible distinction between a mandate to promote the welfare of the Nation and the welfare of the people who live here.

But there's a rub in 'nothing more than'. There's a reason that right-wingers are enraged by the 'desecration' of the flag or other abstract symbols of America, while at the same time are often gleefully blase towards pollution of the physical American land or deprivation of flesh-and-blood American people. I've mentioned before about how the America they fancy themselves loving more than the rest of us is not a flesh and blood thing to them, but a totem. They want to believe that America exists as something beyond human scrutiny, beyond the mundane and mortal, a glorious light, that by submitting to the One True American Way they are the essence of this Light, the embodiment of courage and truth in a world of slugs and slime.

At any rate, to accept that the nation is the people who live here would mean accepting that they take pride in feeling superior love and loyalty for the very people they feel superior to. And not even wingnuts are capable of enough doublethink to ignore this contradiction.

And that brings us back to man living for the Sabbath. A belief that life does not exist for its own sake, (and that therefore improving the general quality of life should be the obvious end of society) but as a test of mettle. It's ideals in the vein of loyalty, courage, strength, endurance, discipline etc, that exist for their own sakes, not because they advance the end of improving the human condition in this way or that. People are here for the sake of honoring these ideals by struggling to measure up to them. And of course the people who hold such beliefs are always convinced that they are among the tiny handful of worthies who are good and strong enough to pass the test, and that they are entitled to punish and reign over the mass of us depraved weaklings as reward.

Why should we believe that 'AMERICA' is good? Because presuming her goodness out of hand is part of the test. Why should we be loyal to 'AMERICA', because 'AMERICA' exists as a canvas to display our loyalty upon. The answer to how many flags to put on your car is always FUCKING MORE.

"Let me admit before I go any further that I am not in the middle of the road on the question of how we ought to treat Mexicans illegally crossing the U.S. border. Here's why: My experiences with folks from Mexico have been almost universally agreeable. To wit:

•When I was in grade school, my father hired a Mexican immigrant to trim up the few trees we had in our Kansas back yard. I watched him do it. And whenever a limb would fall to the ground, Mr. Ortega would say "Adios." I'd never heard anyone say "Adios" to a falling tree limb, and it seemed to me a wonderfully kind thing to say.

•Later, when I was in high school, Mr. Ortego's son, Willie, was a year ahead of me. We were in a school where it was nearly mandatory that every male go out for the football team. I was not a very good defensive end, but Willie was, and he went out of his way to say nice things about my efforts—and to treat me as an equal.

•Four years later, in 1954, a friend of mine and I went into a cafe in Clayton, New Mexico, on our way home from the horse races in Raton, New Mexico. We'd been betting the ponies for three days, and on the last day we didn't cash a single ticket. We were flat broke, hungry, and nearly out of gas. The saint disguised as a waitress in the Clayton cafe, Dolores Sanchez, listened to our tragicomic story and then lent us $5—in those days enough money to pay for our hamburgers and malts and for sufficient gasoline to get home on.

•And in 1982, our daughter, Amy, was a member of a Spanish class that was flying down to Mexico City for a first-hand look at the culture. But en route, her appendix burst and she ended up in a Mexico City hospital. The hospital specialist in such matters—I think his name was Dr. Ruiz—performed the necessary surgery to take care of the burst appendix. By the time I got to Mexico City four days later, Dr. Ruiz had flown off to Paris to deliver a paper on peritonitis. The hospital graciously allowed me to sleep rent-free on a couch in Amy's room while we waited for her to heal enough that we could fly back to Lincoln. Dr. Ruiz' wife and daughter drove us around to see the sights in Mexico City on several of those days, then drove us to the airport when it came time to leave.

So I'll say it again: The people from Mexico that I've been around have almost always been nice folks.

And that leads me—in an indignant tone of voice—to some questions:

Why do we treat Mexican citizens as heinous criminals if they try to cross the border into the U.S. without the proper papers? Do we treat them the same way we treat Canadians who cross the border illegally? Do we treat them the same way Mexico treats U.S. citizens who cross into Mexico without authorization?

The Truth, Mainly

And why is the U.S. House of Representatives even considering a bill that would make it a felony to help Mexicans trying to cross the border?

What that means, according to a story by Michael Riley in the Jan. 2 Denver Post, is that it would be a crime for U.S. church groups, among others, to continue leaving bottles of drinking water along the Mexico-Arizona border in an effort to avoid a repetition of the deaths last year of "at least 279 people" who died from the heat and lack of water while they were trying to enter the U.S.

It also means that it would be a crime for an Arizona organization called "No More Deaths" to transport border-crossers to a hospital or a church for medical treatment.

And it means that even if I had the chance, Mr. Ortega, Willie, Dolores, Dr. and Mrs. Ruiz, I'd never be able to look you in the eye again.

And that loud splashing noise we just heard? I'm guessing it's the Statue of Liberty collapsing into New York Harbor.

You know, the statue that's been there since 1886, standing on a pedestal on which is engraved Emma Lazarus' famous poem that ends with the words we all learned in junior high school:

I was drinking on a porch with a woman named Maria the other night. She did eighteen months in prison awhile back, she didn't say for what. Dropped the 'I don't have to look for trouble, it always finds me.' I let her borrow my phone to call a homeboy of hers. She has two friends who killed people. One of them got in a fist fight with another guy, lost, and then decided to change the outcome after the fact by going home, grabbing his gun, and then returning to shoot the winner in the head.

Her friend arrived. Apparently the night before they had been drinking and Maria punched him a few times in the head out of jealousy for some amorous attention that the man had been showing to another woman. He was still angry, had walked three miles to tell her he was still mad, instead of telling her off over the phone or ignoring the call. 'If I were a bitch you would be knocked the fuck out right now' he said. She alternated between apologizing and daring him to hit her. He said that he didn't hit women. It continued this way for fifteen minutes before I made my way away, how long it went on after that... I've seen arguments reach the threshold of a fight and then stay at that level for hours before, usually between friends or lovers on the low end. They know that it would be wrong to fight each other, but if they back down; their anger is all they have you see.

We've all met people who take pride in claiming that they never back down, never compromise. Maybe you're such a person yourself. Or think of people who either remain in abusive relationships or drift from one bad relationship to another because they seem to equate any strong emotion, positive or negative, with erotic passion. The Eminem song from last summer 'Love the Way you Lie' captures this mindset very well, annoying top 40 tropes aside. Or take Joe Jackson's 'Fools in Love' which observes a similar quality more artfully if less dramatic and more generally.

Former Nebraska Senator Bob Kerrey has recently sent out a letter repping for current Senator and Def Jam recording mate Ben Nelson warning of the boost that the 'Radical Right' would gain from a Nelson defeat. Conservatives here have naturally taken offense to the notion that they're 'radical' or otherwise menacing in any way. They point out that their beliefs are well within the American mainstream, at least out here in Real America among the only people who should be allowed to vote, and state further that Kerrey is guilty of great crimes up to and including living in New York.

And in truth they do have something of a point. Where after all is the objective line where support for lower income taxes transforms from strongly conservative to radical? A demand for a 10% cut? 30%?, a flat tax? Of course there's no line at all. Radicalism is relative, up to a point. A belief cannot be radical based on what policy it specifically calls for, no matter how unusual or unpopular this proposal may be. It is the attitude behind beliefs that make them radical; wherever you see the insistence that one's principals and underlying assumptions are so obviously true that no sane or decent person can possibly dispute them, that disagreement is in itself proof of secret malevolence, there you find radicalism.

In this sense the recent Right-Wing rebranding of Nelson, the insistence that his behavior in the health care Kabuki act, using his position as a swing vote to gain special favors for his home state, was some new and dark turn, instead of the same obfuscating aw-shucks vacillation that he openly campaigned on, is indeed based on the attitude of radicalism. The 'Cornhusker Kickback' is just one of many stupid canards about the obviously evil motives of the health care bills' supporters and hidden evils in the bill itself.

And we have also seen this attitude of radicalism increasingly entrench itself within the American Right more and more generally through the years; the insistence that disagreement with their self-confirming interpretation of the Constitution can only be based on ignorance or hatred of the Constitution, that anyone who opposes some ill-defined (Because it does not and cannot exist) 'Pure Capitalism' can only be a socialist, that everyone who supports Roe V. Wade know themselves to be complicit in the slaughter of millions of literal equivalents of Michelle Tanner, etc. The fact that conservatives are prone to imagining themselves as the eternal standard of American normality does not preclude them from being 'radical'. It does just the opposite.

So naturally some generic, ultimate goodness connecting them all must be the reason why I get a similar endorphin buzz with every positive experience.' God is love.

It's also distinctly human that this benign-in-itself delusion would lead people to believe absurdities and commit atrocities for the sake of maintaining it. Because it is clearly the association of being right with power and life. (the refusal to accept that the truth will not necessarily set you free, will not be of the slightest help in gaining happiness or material well-being) that leads the rise of a fanatical element within every belief system; political, religious, or esoteric, impossible to avoid. If being right makes you strong, then attaining physical supremacy over non-believers should be the ultimate proof of being right, and there will always be those who are overwhelmed with lust for this proof. It's because they manfully know themselves to be right, you see, that entitles them to take whatever desperate measures are necessary to prove to achieve victory and prove to themselves that they are right.

The central conceit of any brand of fundamentalism, that there is really no such thing as human moral reasoning, but only an eternal, unified, indisputable block of truth that can only be embraced or rebelled against in whole, is at base a denial or mortality. Embrace the perfect indisputable truth and you will never be sick.

Obviously this assertion is insane, one of thousands of insane, stupid, and downright evil conclusions that certain people reach every day in the name of internal consistency or True Belief.

And why do we have this tendency to put principle before people, to insist that Man was made for the Sabbath? I think the ultimate explanation for this mindset is that is one of several ways of lying to ourselves that Morality; our response to the soft, vulnerable love we feel for our fellow mortals, can be transformed into Duty, a rock-strong display of masculine courage.

It is a mindset that is by nature belligerent and destructive . When Man is made for the Sabbath then beliefs and opinions become flags. Opinions do not exist for the primary purpose of understanding humanity's problems and interpreting truth, but to display that one is brave enough to have opinions. Tolerance for opposing beliefs is impossible when showing off ones' willingness to fight for his beliefs is seen as the entire point of having them. Violence and social decay are unavoidable when a significant part of the population come to see the ultimate goal of their beliefs to not be their application towards solving practical problems or providing existential comfort but the attainment of physical power and sporting Victory.

The madness of ideological purity (As well as the mad insistence that this is the only form of moral honesty) is something else that becomes unavoidable whenever principle comes before people. The idea that there is any such thing as a pure or corrupted way, a brave or cowardly way, to neurologically process data and draw conclusions should be self-evidently absurd. But when Man is made for the sabbath it becomes essential to believe this nonsense. This is how every question tangentially related to firearms can come to be seen as a test of either absolute support for or absolute enmity towards private gun ownership; how every question tangentially related to taxes, economics, or labor becomes a test of either absolute belief in or absolute rejection of the free market. Just as Man does not live for his own sake, but for the sabbath, so it is that thought does not exist for its own sake, but only ever as a challenge to where you stand.

Simply adhere to the Sabbath always, spend your entire waking life proving your loyalty to it again and again and again, accept that people are less important then the sabbath and that whatever pain you bring them is justified in some way to be determined later. Just outside of North Platte, behind Buffalo Bill's ranch and the Wild West Arena, if you know where those are, northwest side. The spot is called Buttsex Bridge, at least by me. I named it after graffiti that someone tagged on an oil tank next to a creek bridge. It said 'buttsex'. For the longest time thought it said 'bullsex' because of a company sign partially covered the phrase. No trespassing would be my guess, I never read it. You may think that the phrase 'bullsex' must necessarily to either bestiality betweeen humans and bulls or homosexuality among cattle but that isn't so. The truth is that all mammals masturbate. If you're wondering about the ones who don't have hands, which is most of them of course, well they have their ways. Porcupines will fuck gaps between rocks or twigs. A buck that can't get lucky during mating season can actually bend its dick backwards and get off on its own thighs. I saw it on Discovery. I imagine that bulls do something similar to one or the other. They rape calves too, just as likely their own as not since male cattle don't recognize kin.

They cleaned up the 'buttsex tag' several years ago. I smoked weed there many a time. Still do once every year or so, when I'm home for this or that. Weak-ass pale winter sunlight that bounces off of the snow stronger than it actually signs. Still it's a first step. I've been thinking of the phrase 'dead of winter', what would make a good quasi-objective definition of the term. Well, let's say that the 'winter season', if not winter proper, begins with the first solidish precipitation of the fall, be it snow, sleet or whatever. The 'Dead of Winter' then begins on the first day where the daytime high is below twenty degrees Fahrenheit and ends on the last night that drops into single digits Fahrenheit. How's that?

I read the NYT article last week about the jet streams unusually dramatic dip to the south explains why the last two American winters have been unusually harsh, at least by modern standards. I remember that in my childhood and youth Nebraska winters were simply not that bad. 'Alberta clippers', those northern blast-fronts we've been constatly bombarded with since the week before Christmas, were once-a-season rarities. There were only five or six days out of the whole year that were truly bone-cold: Usually it was merely chilly, somewhere in the twenties or thirties, nothing that one couldn't be perfectly comfortable in as long as he had his gloves wool hat and the rest, and even this was broken up by frequent southern thaws pushing temps up into the fifties or sixties.

This shit right here fucking sucks, is what I'm trying to say. But it will be back into the lower thirties this weekend. It's February now and maybe this will be the last time it drops very far below that. Maybe this is the last week of the dead of winter. Or maybe not.

Journeying To the Black Realms of the Human Soul With Stuart Little: Part 1

"When Mrs. Frederick C. Little's second son arrived, everybody noticed that he was not much bigger than a mouse. The truth of the matter was, the baby looked like a mouse in every way"

Thus begins E.B. White's psychosocialsexual nightmare of a novel, and it's never suggested that little Stuart doesn't arrive 'in the usual way' to paraphrase Harry Chapin. The logical assumption for a reader to make is that Stuart is in fact a sentient mouse physically born to a human mother, and of course there's only one obvious explanation for how this occured. How then does Stuart's 'father', old Fred Little himself, deal with such extreme humiliation? Certainly it's painful enough for a wife to be unfaithful with some virile young pool boy or old flame from college, but a mouse? (Surely EB White could have named this poor cuckold something a bit more settle than 'Mr. Little'.)

As a matter of fact, the way that the senior Little responds to his wife's infidelety is seemingly to not do so at all. He makes an outward show of accepting this mouseman as his own son and raising him as such. Yet just beneath this show of acquiescence we see Fred taking several small passive-aggresive measures of revenge. He subjects the mousechild to aural torture under the pretext of holding up a faulty piano key. (Stuart, perhaps showing signs of self-loathing brought about by his 'father's' barely concealed hatred, is said to 'like all the same') And then there's this seemingly off-hand comment made at the end of chapter 2.

"' After all he does look a good deal like a mouse,' said Mr. Little to his wife. 'And I've never seen a mouse yet that didn't like to go into a hole.'"
'And neither have you you besitial whore' is the obvious implication here.

Most telling of all though is the scene near the very beginning of the story, in which Mrs. Little drops her wedding ring down a bathtub drain. And Frederick, after watching his wife make several futile attempts at fishing the ring out with a bent hairpin, casually sends his supposed son on a dangerous mission to retrieve the ring himself.
Let us elaborate further what is going on here. The bathtub drain is described as 'slimy', and since Mr. Little has just bathed himself, it's reasonible to conclude here that much of this 'slime' is in fact his very own body filth. So here we have the wife, dropping the symbol of wedding vows we know she has violated into what can be accurately described as a corrupted, dirty canal. Yet at the same time much of the foulness of this drain has just been washed off of Frederick's own body. He then ties Stuart to a string and sends him down the drain to retrieve the ring himself, which the eagar-to please mousechild dutifully does. So when Stuart and the ring emerge out of the canal into the light the author makes it clear that both are now covered in 'Fred's slime'. This is clearly an attempt by the senior Little to restore his marraige and rechristian Stuart as his own true son after the fact. But erstatz ritual can never take away his sense of inadequacy and betrayal, and his indirect manner of dealing with these feelings can be nothing but slow poison to both his family and himself.

In summing up the opening chapters of 'Stuart Little' (the origins of Stuart himself and Fred Little's cryptic yet still malevolent reaction), I can not help but notice some very clear parallels to the biblical Nativity story. My own theory is that White intended 'Stuart Little' at least partly as a savage parody of the birth of Christ and an oblique denunciation of Christianity itself. Fred Little is of course Joseph, the bizzarely sanguine accidental stepfather. Yet what does it mean for Jehovah to be paired with a mouse? My guess here is that this is White's way of saying that Fred Little/Joseph is not the only victim of emasculation here, that the birth of marked a sudden change from the harsh warrior-God of the Old Testament to a decidedly softer and more effeminate diety, and I fear that the manner in which the animal/human hybrid Stuart evokes old Greek myths may be intended as a hidden dog-whistle call for some kind of fascist/warrior ethos.

Whatever the case may be, there are many other dark themes appearing in this novel that must be examined, and shall be examined by yours trully in due time.

One was casually resting on a chain-link fence with a dead robin in its left talons, looking at through and past me as it scanned the street-level for whatever. It's one of those things that's perhaps interesting only in the sense that it's something one will probably see only once or twice in one's life. KAMEL RIAHI's op-ed piece in yesterday's New York Times, describing his and his family's experience in the current uprising there, is profoundly moving, describing on the one hand the sincere thrill that comes from the sudden realistic hope for liberty, and the horror of social chaos on the other. Riahi is a professional writer, and it should go without saying that those who express themselves for a living have, in addition to the basic needs of human dignity that demand liberty, the most to materially gain from a free environement. Yet the true force of his article comes from the way he observes that he, his wife, or his child may be killed by any faction at any time for any or no reason. The matter-of fact way he describes this reality, (in the manner of a Seattle man taking an umbrella with him on a clear day, because you never know,)should act as a stern rebuke to anyone who romanticises political strife or struggle, anyone who seeks psuedo immortality by subsuming themselves into a great cause and denying the frailties of human life; the universality of suffering, futile love, and unattainible hope that is the true bond of loyalty between us all.

Good luck to these Tunisians and whatever neighbors of theirs may be inspired by their example to fight for their humanity. And do keep in mind that force of numbers is obviously your biggest strength; so, these cases of people burning themselves alive are really counterproductive, to say the least. Senator Tony fulton has introduced a bill banning the prescription of the 'abortion drug' RU486, via teleconference. These are women after all, and the fact that God put them here to produce men isn't for them to decide. But again, this sacred truth is neither here nor there. It's about safety you see. It is absolutely essential to the safety of the fuckmaid/man factory that the doctor be there in person, and not on the phone, for the following exchange.

Let's be clear, if the above statements strike you as obviously leftist or rightist in character, and serves as proof of how wicked and dangerous those people are; well you're wrong I suppose, and more to the point why the hell are you thinking in such terms when a nine year old girl is dead?

There is to be sure some elements of Loughners thoughts that vaguely echo the borderline mainstream of political discourse; dumb ideas held by otherwise sane people; and these elements could be construed as sort of libertarianish. Apparently everyone has the right to their own currency, and your can even have two or three just for yourself, but only if it's backed by gold or silver. 'Federalist laws', (we may be assured that however he defines 'federalist' is total dada.) are treasonous somehow, and a universal standard form of written English is apparently, really bad, or maybe really good, or neither.

It also should be obvious that the mad are just as human and therefore social as the rest of us. And they are bound to be influenced by their social environments in ways that are both different from and perfectly similar to how sane people are influenced. It's no coincidence that Lincoln's own Chrisma Woman, cursed by schizophrenia to think that strangers are always out to get her, obsesses over Muslims and Chinese, two of the most popular targets for better hinged xenophobes.

And finally it is likely that Loughner was driven to kill by the same basic motives that lead perfectly sane people into believing stupid things and committing atrocities in the name of their beliefs; the desire for a fantastic, 'strong' morality of cosmic struggle and triumph over an earthly morality of vulnerable compassion and humility.

This is the mindset of the fanatic; left, right, or miscellaneous. And though the American right has been far more guilty than the left of this sort of fantastic zealotry, drawing in those who feel insecure about their masculinity or loss of social predominance with the claim that politics, along with every question in every other moral and philosophical realm, is a war; and that goodness is not instilled by living and practicing goodness but by fighting for and defending it, imposing it upon the wicked through force. It may be that the 'heated rhetoric' that naturally comes with such a mindset may have influenced Loughner's actions in some way, but it is dishonest to state this as fact. And posters on lefty blogs who angrily insist that the Tea Party or Sarah Palin indisputably have blood on their hands are only infected with a different strain of the same true believer status as they are.

We'll find out more about this Loughner, or not, whether he acted alone or with someone else, or not, whether he was involved with any movement that has a recognizable place on the right/left spectrum, or not. None of this means a thing compared to the six people who are dead and the congresswoman who may or may not join them. Get over yourselves.

Amanda Marcotte brilliantly tears apart Antonin Scalia and the whole fraudulent voodoo of 'constitutional originalism' from her own feminist perspective. Scalia has recently written an opinion, in his typical impossibly self-assured style, stating that the fourteenth amendment wasn't meant to apply to women. This in spite of the fact that, well;

" All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside. No State shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States; nor shall any State deprive any person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws."

The above quote is the original text, the only text there is or ever has been of the fourteenth amendment, section one. You can see for yourself that when the original authors, while originating this law, were faced with choosing between the word 'persons' or the word 'men', chose of their own original accord to use the word 'persons'. And yes, the English language did have words to distinguish gender back then, in case you were wondering. Benjamin Franklin invented them. So that isn't an issue here. Scalia however, thanks to his manfully disciplined originalism, knows the minds of writers who have been dead for at least a century better than they themselves knew their own minds while alive. It's not some namby-pamby theory of his that they wrote 'persons' when they really meant to say 'men'. He knows that they only wrote persons instead of men by mistake.

The money quote from Marcotte:
Scalia’s “'I can read the minds of people in the past without knowing my history” act is getting really old. Can we just stop pretending he’s some great legal mind? He doesn’t even know how to read the word persons'”.

This latest opinion by Scalia is just a particularly obvious example of how 'originalism', 'strict constructionalism', or whatever you ant to call it, is not, and was never meant to be, an intellectually honest system of legal thought. Its only purpose is to provide pseudo-intellectual cover for denying the civil rights of people we don't like. Its the legal equivalent of Randianism or some other libertarian claptrap. Libertarianism and originalism are both philosophies for those who are torn between their own supremicist mindsets on the one hand and a social environment that teaches them that they must love 'freedom' on the other. And so libertarianism and originalism were both cooked up by feverish minds scrambling to produce anti-egalitarian theories of liberty. This is of course impossible, and will always lead to blatant absurdities presented as sacred universal truths.

And as is usually the case with true believers of any sort, is is the claims to universality, to ownership of truth and normality, that makes the strict constructionalists especially irritating. Their claims that this crystal-ball act of theirs was the standard legal consensus before activist judges suddenly popped up sometime in the 1950's are objectively false, and the misogyny and racism lying behind such claims are obvious. This latest Republican vaudeville act of reading the Constitution out loud on the House floor is meant to imply that the originalist interpretation is the obvious one to anyone who truly knows what the Constitution says, and that disagreement with origionalism is in itself outrageously radical.

This sort of visually aggressive moral certainty is always a sign of weakness. It is either the posture of one who knows himself to be full of shit or the defensive reflex of one who is so wrapped up in beleiving what he's supposed to believe that any call for scrutiny feels like a physical attack. The trouble for Republicans and their authoritarian ilk is that this country actually is slowly becoming better educated and less bigoted in spite of their best efforts. So we'll see how long they continue to make hay out of these tired displays of righteousness.

Quick Thought on Judgement

When I was a teenager I would get offended by claims that 'we shouldn't judge others'. It struck me as PC nonsense, back in the days before I realized that complaints of political correctness were themselves the nonsense claims of those who confused dickishness for courage. And I myself was one of many who confused non-judgment with weakness and amorality. How could one possibly believe anything at all without passing judgment on personal traits and behaviors that one found objectionable.

As I've grown older I've come to realize that 'you shouldn't judge' isn't quite literal, it's more of a simplification for minds that may not be mature enough to grasp the nuances of its truth, it is indeed a perfectly valid and necessary moral tenant. The problem that the statement is meant to condemn isn't judgment or condemnation per se. Obviously we can't help but to assess the actions of others as either generally right or wrong. The problem is the notion that our own assessment of what others do is the ultimate point behind what they do; the half-conscious feeling that bad behavior exists for the purpose of showing us why such behavior is wrong and making us feel good about ourselves for not doing it.

But morality isn't about being rewarded for doing right and punished for doing wrong; neither at the physical, emotional or spiritual level. Morality is only about doing what is right or wrong, period. When there is a person who is suffering at least partially because of some foolishness he brought upon himself and now needs help getting out, then the fact that he is a bad person who did wrong is always secondary to the fact that he is a suffering person who needs help.

This is what was so pernicious about that old witch Dr. Laura, and to a lesser extent what continues to be wrong with daytime talk shows and reality TV to this day. Say there's a teenage girl you know, either in your extended family or maybe the daughter of a friend, who suddenly finds yourself pregnant by some dull mook who couldn't raise a rock. You'd be disappointed in the girl, and probably tell her so, but you wouldn't browbeat her, because that obviously would do nothing to improve the situation, and the fact that this person you know and care about was reckless is simply unimportant compared to the question of how you can help. Obviously this same girl wouldn't get the slightest bit of help from the likes of Dr. Laura or Jerry Springer. The entire purpose of such shows is to turn the failings of flesh-and-blood people who suffer and are loved into abstractions. They are now morality fables, enduring the hosts verbal abuse so that the audience can feel assured of their own goodness, so that the suburban megachurch crowd that made up Dr. Laura's audience can reassure themselves that they are the only people on earth not covered in filth and that society would be lost without their control of it.

It was a George Will column I read today that made me think of all this. He reviews a book about America's 'loss of self-control' and dwells a bit on the obesity problem in the lower classes. It bothered me greatly, the way this leading light of the 'taxing the rich is the ultimate evil' crowd was reproaching the little people for their lack of austerity.

Environmental stimuli and our genetic inheritances circumscribe self-control, but Akst insists that we are not merely fleshy robots responding to them. Skepticism about free will has, however, become convenient and soothing, because exculpatory behaviors once considered signs of bad character have been drained of moral taint by being medicalized as "addictions."

This of course is a false dichotomy. To describe a bad habit as an addiction does nothing to excuse the addict from moral culpability, and I think that deep down George Will probably knows this full well. His real problem is that he resents any hint of a suggestion that he should feel pity for the weak and addicted instead of feeling superior to them, and this resentment is what the Right's imaginary war between 'personal responsibility' and 'blaming society' has always been about. Whatsoever you do for the least or my people might make your hands dirty.

I'm thinking of kicking about Mexico for a couple of weeks in the spring. I bought a passport last week. You didn't used to need a passport to go to Mexico or Canada I've been as far abroad as Vancouver and Monterrey, but you need one now, so.

Anyway when my uncle heard about my vague plans he warned me that 'they're gunning down Americans on sight.' as proof he offered the figure of six Americans murdered in Mexico in the past six months, about as many murdered Americans as the city of Lincoln produces in a year, and of course Mexico is a neighbor and a huge trading partner, and the number of citizens of one country currently being in the other at the moment is for various reasons much higher than the population of Lincoln at any time. Not that I want to downplay the real dangers of Mexican nightlife, just to say that it's the same as any other bad neighborhood, nation-sized or no. Never buy drugs on credit and you'll be exponentially safer everywhere.

But he's not one to bother arguing with my uncle. He's one who takes pride in being right while at the same time being able to separate his own rightness from the level of fact in what he says. What he says isn't right because the information is correct, this matters very little. No, whatever he happens to say is right because he is the one saying it and I am his junior. Yesterday he said something about how well the Creighton football team was doing, and I got nothing but an angry brick wall response when I pointed out that they haven't played American football there since the forties, though the soccer team is indeed pretty good.

Later that day he pointed out that many Native Americans are changing their names back to something prototypicaly Native instead of whatever Anglophone name was imposed on their families back in Boarding House days. The way my uncle stated this made it clear that he considered this a case of minorities getting special rights, 'They can do anything on Indian Reservations' when of course everybody is free to change their name to anything. There are some exceptions, they'll be no getting 'Dr. Cuntfucker Supreme' printed on your license, and it's something that's done very rarely, since of course it make family dinners even more painful, but it's legal to all just the same.

The uncle said that when Indians on the Rosebud Reservation are given subsidized housing, either from The State or the casino up there, the first thing they do is rip out the toliets and sinks and sell them to the highest bidder, using the holes in the floor for waste removal.

And as I've said before he's right of course. Because being right is not what he is on a given subject but who he is. And in case you were wondering, no, the Rosebud Sioux don't actually pawn off their own indoor plumbing, and you were stupid for wondering. But that's not important.

North Freeway Mentioned in News Today

US. Hwy 75, which north of downtown Omaha used to run on 30th street from Dodge all the way to the city limits, currently runs along a freeway that splits North Omaha in twain for about five miles before filtering back into city traffic, on 30th street, just as one is entering the White neighborhood of Florence.

The North Freeway was a disaster for North Omaha, houses bulldozed, families displaced, businesses and the jobs they provided ground into dust and for what? A freeway that dead-ends back on city streets not more than five minutes out of downtown, cutting maybe three minutes off of a driver's commute. It was clearly built on the attitude that real Americans always drive, period; that cars do not exist for getting to the city but that cities exist to give cars something to drive through, that certain classes of people living in the city are not people at all, and so whatever they suffer in the name of progress,(Giving the people who actually matter slightly more incentive to drive) is unimportant.

So now there's a move afoot to name this evil chunk of road after Martin Luther King, in the name of 'healing.' For some reason I'm thinking of Chris Rock's tales of flunking his Black History class as a child, answering every question with 'Martin Luther King!'. And which Martin Luther King do they intend to name the road after? The real MLK or the one who shills for Mercedes-Bens and opposes affirmative action? I think you know the answer to that as well as I do dear reader.

Senator Ernie Chambers (He will always be Senator, capitialized, always.) has raised a ruckus about this attempt to 'prettyfy' this atrocity. good for him, and may he live for another fifty years as an advocate for people who the leaders of this state hold in such naked and open contempt.

If they must name the North Freeway after a person then I would suggest old Roman Hruska, the man who as US Senator once bullied the mayor of San Francisco for daring to oppose having various freeways manfully plowed through his effeminate neighborhoods. Yeah, I guess it's kind of old. But I just read it, so bear with me.

This post is largely about people trying to assure themselves of their own goodness by taking proud, ostentatious stands against things every sane person is against. It's similar I think to things that I've touched on a lot in my own thoughts and writings.

It reminded me of the death penalty debate, among other things, the way that DP supporters will piously declare that they motivated by empathy for murder victims, while suggesting that DP opponents must not care about the victims. And of course the premise that it is impossible to mourn a murder victim without screaming for the killers head is known to be false. Relatives of the victim after all, parents, spouses, siblings, who indisputably love their dead, have often called for the killers life to be spared for one reason or the other.

So support for the death penalty seems a pretty obvious way of upping the moral ante for the morally insecure. If you convince yourself that it is impossible to oppose murder without opposing the death penalty, then an obvious given suddenly becomes something exceptional and heroic.

And we Americans live in a culture that is both highly competitive and deeply moralistic. We are raised to believe that exceptional and heroic is the basic minimum standard of what we should strive to be; and so this anti-kitten burning pseudo-morality could be applied to any number of other issues as well. In this we are surely not alone.

Gay men accepted a study in which some were given a placebo in place of a medical pill. This is illegal because persons with a placebo would be getting AIDS and AIDS without proper medicine for 6 months or as long as the study occurred.

On intelligence, 43 percent said men and women were equal, 38 percent said women were smarter and 14 percent said men were smarter.

Some might see this stat as a sign that feminism has gone too far, that attitudes towards gender have jumped over the point of fairness and straight into the realm of reverse discrimination. But what this survey actually displays is the old feminist trope that 'patriarchy hurts men too.' It shows that feminism hasn't gone far enough in breaking down the nonsense that American men believe about ourselves.

Women have more freedom to outwardly appear intelligent, openly thoughtful and ambivalent, whereas men are taught that reaching a conclusion for its own sake, and then manfully standing behind it, is far more important than the process of reaching that conclusion. To value the thought process is necessarily to confess to vulnerability and weakness. To acknowledge fallible judgment and the possibility of being wrong is to acknowledge the possibility of being hurt by the consequences of being wrong. This is blasphemy to our masculine ideal. The true man is not only perfectly strong but perfect strength, unstoppable for as long as he simply and sincerely believes in his rightness.

Now obviously the idea that thought itself is unmanly can lead men to do inconceivably stupid things, and it is in fact the main culprit behind every one of humanity's all-time dumbest decisions. So naturally women in authority who aren't burdened by this trope are going to look much smarter than men who are. Still I reckon that many of the thirty eight percent who told the Pew Center that women were more intelligent than men will still vote for a tough decisive man they can have a beer with.

The most important thing that Wikileaks does is to demystify the State's power over life and death, deflate the mythical archtype of the Jason Bourne/Jack Ryan style technosuperman, expose our fascination with the modern war making and dirty tricks business; with all of its fantastic technology and intriguing code languages, as nothing but the most childish servility.

To read through the Wikileaks files on war, peace, diplomacy espionage and the rest is to discover that there is no 'great game' going on, no taut psychological thriller keeping you on the edge of your seat. Decisions over the lives of hundreds or thousands or people are not made with cameras slow-panning the tension on the faces of various sundry officials while the leader cites Plato in a speech on the terrible import of what he is about to do.

No, the relationships between the nations of the world, whether malevolent or benign, are determined by very flawed and perfectly ordinary people, people who will or won't order a bombing that kills thousands if they decide that this is the most personally convenient choice to make, the one that will prevent the need to make more decisions later. There is a cliquish and banal familiarity between geopolitical players. Tensions between nations rise and fall based on the personal jealousies between leaders and diplomats. It's all so routine and human, to the point where I think the powers that be would actually prefer that they've been caught in some horrible scandal, some Illuminati-style conspiracy, because at least there's still some aura to being sinister. But no, the great leaders of the world are all a little myopic and more than a little dopey, but that's really all they are.

I read a 'Life article' on Haiti, and a corresponding thread on Fark. The story was as dispiriting as you might expect, but it's some of the thread comments that really caught my eye.

This sensitivity is very common among small-fish citizens of big-fish nations. It may seem easy to accept being born into a rich and powerful society as just good luck, but it's actually very hard, not in spite of our material comforts but because of them. One who has been born here into the modern United States, on gone on to invest in our institutions and make his life here; house car job and the rest, needs to believe that his relative fortune is cosmically deserved, and cannot accept that he could have just as easily (more easily in fact) been born into a place where the precise level of talent and intelligence he has now would leave him starved naked and dead.

Mark Christensen of Imperial, who I best remember for thanking God for his Aryan looking children in an interview to the Journal-Star a few years back, wants to introduce a law removing the 'duty to retreat' for those threatened with attack from inside their homes or vehicles. This is a fad that's been pushed by the NRA and other groups in various states in recent years, and the purpose is quite obviously to make the 'man's home is his castle' saw literally encoded in law. Personally I like the retreat law. But maybe that's just because I've been feminized enough to think that violence is bad-in-itself, and that the choice between the good guys life and bad guys life should best be avoided until it is absolutely impossible. Surely the graveyards are full of enough real men who took heroic stands against evil, relished in making offenders suffer, and than wilted to death from old age to prove that macho is bullshit. Apparently some don't think so.

The bill is a clear example of what the right wing considers freedom to be, which is not democracy as much as democratic feudalism. (Hence the pedantic insistence that we are a republic instead of a democracy in some libertarian circles.) By this thinking the right to vote and speak ones mind are a good deal less important than the right to punish personal offenses however a (White, Christian) man sees fit, up to and including most crucially having some power over life and death. Legal equality exists only to provide a fair playing field for men to fight for dominance and expand their fiefs, while social equality, not just forced economic equality but any attempt to alter the social hierarchy, is the blackest of all evils.

In the New York Times I read of a man who helped to attach some right-to-carry boilerplate in a Congressional bill meant to give citizens of Washington DC. better federal representation. He admitted, or rather bragged, about not giving a damn whether the people of DC had the right to vote or not. they are nothing but a bunch of Brown peasents, and living in an urban environment like that requires a good deal of innate cooperativeness between citizens. That makes them doubly evil, so fuck em.

IMPORT TAXES
Before 1920 there were no income taxes. Federal gov-ernment got all their needs met with import taxes.
We need our factories back. We can place import taxes on electronics from China. This encourages electronics made here without subliminals. Other factories can flourish here in the states too. More factories here mean a better economy with more jobs.
People delight in making things. We have to move forward with some inventions Asians already have. Plastics with clay may mold more intricate artistic products.
Only a tiny tariff added and the end of income tax is in sight.

TABLES IN SCHOOL BUSES
Students can study longer while in a school bus on their way to and from school.
Outfit our school buses as you would an airplane with folding mini tables that come out in front of a seated child.
A ceiling light can be turned on in winter months when the sun sets early. This increases study time. Seat belted stu-dents are better behaved. Students with tables and light can have better academic scores. Tables are not steady for writing but a book on a table with a light encourages reading. We don’t want stu-dents to be on a bus more than an hour.
Southern states can have bike and bus commuting for more fitness, less gas used and more kids getting home faster.
BIKE RACES
To encourage fitness let’s have bike races for ages 9-12 on a country road at the end of the school year. All you need is thread for the finish line.
We suggest stolen bikes from police can be given to Christian groups to hand out to no income families for nine year olds under the Christmas tree. Then every kid can join the race in May.

ANSWERS TO BACKPACK INCEDENTARIES
The problem is Chinese have incedentaries that are silent and in this country now. It pulverizes a three story building like Ferguson Hall at UNL. Chinese adver-tized houses being pulverized as seen from above with footage on America’s TV commercials for a year. Of course they are the ones doing the demolitions. Chi-nese have to be escorted out of this country. We don’t know what exact Chinese person is responsible for all the subliminals and inceden-taries so get them all out. 99% are likely to be guilty including students. Obama is getting a trillion dollars a month from Chinese by buying our bonds. Is Obama going to get Chinese out of this country?
Another answer is to have only clear plastic backpacks in this country. Set a time in a month se every school kid, college student, American and visiting foreigner has to have a clear plastic backpack instead. In WWII we made all women to no longer wear nylons. Help make clear plastic backpacks the law in every state.
Sometimes Russians wear these backpacks so we cannot check whether they are Americans or Russians by looking at their faces.
X-ray cars as they come into America. Can we x-ray cars and luggage as they come across the Mississippi and Missouri river over our bridges? Can we x-ray cars and luggage when going from state to state as one would at customs? Protect the innocent

ADMIRE SOUTH KOREANS
A South Korean single woman coming into the home of a married woman stops at the wedding picture to admire for 5 minutes. They rarely divorce and almost all marry young. They form bible groups in their homes to cull who to marry. Only 20% get into their colleges in South Korea. Many come here wanting their teen children to go to college and they are brilliant. They test for col-lege several times and com-pare scores in their con-versations even if they are bound for art school. Average age a woman gets their own business is 26 compared to age 50 for an American woman. Very few use drugs. They commonly work up to 80 hours a week. Their children go to classes until 8PM like they do in South Korea. South Koreans are kind and modest despite their flare for designer clothes. Buy from them instead.

"In 2008, the Pew Hispanic Center, calculated that there might be 11.2 million illegal immigrants in the United States. That is about 4% of the population. The state with the greatest proportion was Arizona, with 7.9%. These numbers, like any Census of a large population, are necessarily inaccurate, but they are the best we’ve got. With the recession, most experts agree that the population of illegal residents has probably declined since 2008.

If you read my last blog posting, you may not be surprised to know that poll respondents have a completely distorted estimate of the number of illegal immigrants in their state. The average response when asked what percent of their state is illegal immigrants was just over 17% - that is, the average American thinks almost 1 in 5 people are illegal immigrants.

One final note – Americans of all political ideologies show some tendency to, not only over-estimate the number of illegal immigrants, but also to have trouble separating Hispanics generally from illegal immigrants particularly. Let me explain: in addition to asking about the percentage of illegal immigrants in their state, I also asked what percentage of their state is Hispanic. I think it is safe to assume that when most people hear the term “illegal immigrant”, they almost exclusively assume that the illegal immigrant is from Latin America - meaning that when they say 17% of their state is illegal immigrants that they are saying that at least 17% of their state is Hispanic. If I am correct about this, a rough way to estimate the percentage of Hispanics that a respondent thinks are illegal immigrants is simply to compare their answer to the questions about the percentage Hispanic to their answer about the percentage illegal immigrants. Among all white respondents, the average answer to the question about illegal immigrants was almost 2/3rds the size of their answer to the question about Hispanics – meaning, if they thought about it – they are likely indicating that they think that 2/3rds of all Hispanics in their state are illegal immigrants. Among “very conservative” whites the answer to the Hispanic question was, astoundingly, almost 3/4ths the size of the answer about illegal immigrants – implying that 3/4ths of Hispanics are illegal immigrants."

This is related, I think to the narritives of President Obama as a radical, Muslim, illegitimate usurper, etc. It's a gross simplification to say that all opposition to Obama or anti-immigration hysteria is based on direct and conscious racism. (It is also a convenient strawman for the right, who can dismiss critiques of their more absurd conspiracy theories by saying something akin to 'liberals always shout racism when they can't win an argument.) Old-school, overt, cross burning racism has become taboo in almost every segment of American society. But I do think that this distorted view of reality, in regards to both the president and the Hispanic wave, has a good deal to do with latant racism. It's a half-conscious feeling among the White middle class that their control of society is simply the natural order of things; that a world where politicians focus on pandering for their votes, popular culture focuses on catering to their sensibilities, and corporations focus on marketing for their dollars; is nothing more than a world running on its proper equilibrium.

The desire to believe that many if not most Hispanic newcomers are 'illegal', the fact that the sort of banal ethnic-identity markers that should be taken as givens, (Latinos speaking Spanish among themselves, old country flags on truck windows) are seen as signs of their illegality, is clearly meant to delegitimatize the physical reality of their being here. Just as narratives of President Obama as a mad Leftist hellbent on corrupting America's natural state are also obvious attempts to deligitimize his presence in the White House.

For many in the White middle and upper classes, the idea that their loss of cultural and demographic dominance could possibly be benign, spontaneous, and organic is simply inconceivable. This is especially true in rural and suburban areas where they have previously been not only culturally dominant but culturally uniform. The mere fact that we are losing this control is proof enough that there are malevolent forces behind this loss.
